How I’m Building a Business in 2025: Without Being Tech-Savvy (Pray for Me)
You know what’s funny? Being an 'elder millennial' and completely confused by technology. Aren’t we supposed to be the generation that invented hashtags and lived on AIM, pretending to be 10 years older than we were, in between dial-up tones? I mean, I’ve owned every iPhone since the one with the home button. And yet, here I am, acting like uploading a reel is equivalent to producing a full length film.
When I decided to start a business, I pictured it all so clearly. I’d be sitting in my at home office (yes, a mess) with my soft twinkle lights, my an iced coffee, clicking a few buttons, launching a website, compiling an adaptive course and since everyone cheering me on is saying vendors need you, then this is going viral on Instagram within days. Simple, right?
Except nothing has been simple. At all.
Let’s talk about building a website. I thought I’d drag and drop my way into a stunning homepage. But instead, I’ve spent hours googling, youtube and chatting with my CRM customer service on things like “why won’t my header stay centered” and “how to undo everything I just did.” Every time I try to make something mobile-friendly, it somehow breaks the desktop version, and I feel personally attacked by my own design. Or deletes altogether, just like this very blog did the first draft, when I didn't realize auto-save wasn't on and despite the save button, alas, it did not save!
And then there are reels. Reels are supposed to be quick, catchy, and polished. Everyone says they take five minutes to make. Lies. I’ve spent an entire afternoon trying to sync my pointing to floating text and somehow always end up offbeat and pointing at nothing. Don’t even ask how many times I’ve accidentally deleted the whole thing while trying to upload!
Technology has become my biggest business obstacle. It’s not that I don’t try. I do. But everything takes me twice as long as it should. I’ve spent more time editing a single reel than I did naming my entire business.
Sometimes I genuinely believe the apps are plotting against me. Canva freezes right when I get in the zone. Instagram decides to glitch every time I try to upload a draft. My computer fan sounds like it’s preparing for liftoff, every time I open more than two tabs.
But you know what? I’m still doing it.
I’m building the business anyway. Even if I groan in the process. Even if it takes me twelve hours to do something, that takes the internet’s favorite Gen Z'er entrepreneur twelve minutes.
Because it’s not really about being tech-perfect. It’s about showing up. It’s about learning as you go, staying stubborn, laughing through the chaos, and celebrating every tiny win. Like finally figuring out how to add music to your reel without accidentally muting your voice.
So if you’re also fumbling your way through tech and business, know this: you’re in good company. Some of us are not tech wizards, as much as our parents have faith in us that we are their IT Support. Some of us are just determined humans with big dreams, glitchy devices, and a whole lot of persistence. And damn it, that is OK!
